For years, the 17-century monument has been in dire need of proper upkeep. There was once a plan to reactivate the gardens’ hydraulic system which pumps water to the dozens of fountains, but then the perennial paucity of funds scuttled it.

Defences erected by the Sikh army during the First Anglo Sikh wars have been discovered by UK based historian Amarpal Singh Sidhu . The defences, built for the battle of Sabraon in 1846, remarkably still survive albeit in a badly faded state.

Kashmir Sikhs who lived here have sought the intervention of Prime Mister Dr. Manmohan Singh to initiate diplomatic efforts with Pakistan government for the reconstruction of the historic Gurdwara of sixth Sikh Guru Shri Hargobind Ji at village 'Naloochhi' near Muzaffarabad which has been converted in to the police lines in Pakistan Occupied Kashmir (POK).
