Chandigarh administration to draft action plan for city’s heritage

The Chandigarh Administration will finalize an action plan to preserve city’s heritage. The blueprint of the action plan will be finalized in the meeting to be chaired by the UT Administrator Shivraj Patil. This meeting has been scheduled on December 15.

The team of experts has been asked to identify, conserve and manage heritage of the city, more specifically the architectural heritage. It will submit a report on its finding which will be submitted to the Union Government. This process was started in the month of June when this team was formed, with an aim of identification of buildings with heritage importance.

The team consists of such three groups that will suggest a heritage conservation plan for the city. The three groups had been mandated to identify the buildings, draft an engineering master plan and deal with legal aspects related with the process, respectively.

As per the experts, the entire city of Chandigarh has to be treated as a single entity for the task of preserving its heritage. The buildings that have to be covered in the first phase include contributions of Le Corbusier, Pierre Jeanneret, Maxwell Fry and Jane Drew. Le Corbusier’s contributions include the Secretariat, the High Court, Tower of Shadows, the Legislative Assembly and Martyrs Memorial.

Pierre Jeanneret had designed The Architects Office, sector 19 and Jane Drew had designed GMCH sector 16 and government school in sector 23. Maxwell Fry had contributed for city by designing Government Colleges for Boys and Girls, Kiran Cinema, Government Press and sector 22.
