The Amritsar chapter of Indian National Trust for Art and Cultural Heritage (INTACH) is actively pursuing its objective of conserving the material and architectural heritage of Punjab particularly what precious little has been left in Amritsar after onslaught of forces of urbanization and development.

An impressive walk was organized by the State Convener INTACH Dr. Sukhdev Singh. In this walk a contingent of foreign students from European and American countries and INTACH members of Amritsar Prof. Harkamal Singh, Er. Daljit Singh Kohli, Incharge of School Heritage Clubs Mr. Amrit Lal Mannan participated. The tourists were taken round the entire route of the special walk (Jalian Wala Bagh, Katra Ahaluwalia, Saragari Memorial, Gurudwara Santokhsar, Guru Ke Mehal, Toba Bhai Salo, Hindu College , Taksaal of Maharaja Ranjit Singh, Chourasti Attari, Chitta Akhara and Akhara Sangalwala etc.).

The participants keenly observed the activities of people and shopkeepers and were amazed at seeing beautiful carvings, wood work on the facade of buildings of the old city.  The Zalli Work and specially decorated facade houses and havelies in the walled city were of the special attraction for the visitors. Dr. Sukhdev Singh enlightened the owners of some heritage sites about the importance of their dwellings and assured them that govt. was interested in helping them for maintaining their buildings in a proper way. They should not harbour any doubts or suspicion in their mind that their building would be occupied. Mr. Mannan appealed to the residents to join INTACH efforts in pursuing the prosperity of heritage of Amritsar .

The local corporation authorities should provide proper sanitation in the interior city where the tourists go for heritage walk. Vehicular traffic in the narrow lanes of the city should not be allowed as in the European countries because it creates lot the trouble for the pedestrians and public have to face traffic jams.
