Heritage town status sought for Sultanpur Lodhi

SLThe Punjab government has sought heritage town status for historic town of Sultanpur Lodhi, which is associated with first Sikh master, Guru Nanak Dev.

The issue would be taken up with PM Dr Manmohan Singh, CM Parkash Singh Badal said while presiding over a meeting of Sultandpur Lodhi Development Board here on Tuesday.

The local government department has been asked to prepare a proposal to be taken up with the union ministry of urban development to include Sultanpur Lodhi under the Jawaharlal Nehru Urban Renewal Mission (JNURM). Badal categorically stated that the original architect and grandeur of the town would be preserved while implementing various development projects.

Notably, enough damage has already been done to some historic sites such as the original house of Bebe Nanki, Guru Nanak's sister, who was married in this town, where Guru Nanak came to stay for work and attained spiritual heights before embarking on his ‘udaasis'(long travels).

Badal also directed the transport department to start new direct bus service from Sultanpur Lodhi to Delhi, Talwandi Sabo, Anandpur Sahib and Vaishno Devi to be a part of religious tourism circuit in the state.

A new bus stand and a fire station would also be constructed. Bhai Baldeep Singh of the Anhad Foundation has been asked to workout a plan for restoration of Qila which presently houses a police station, which would be shifted as per the grand plans for the town.
