Time ticking to save historical clock : Citys 120-year-old heritage on sale

Mayo Hospital set to auction the clock today

LAHORE: Instead of preserving or maintaining the 120-year old clock, the Mayo hospital's administration is trying to get rid of this relic through auctioning.

It is learnt that the administration allegedly condemned the clock affixed in the front elevation of the main building deliberately, and now all set to sell it out to some one who is interested in the clock under the cover of auction, to be held on Thursday (today).

The clock reminds the colonial architectural style and tells a chapter of history, especially the patients who have visited the infirmary.

The clock once served an important purpose as before the middle of the 19th century, t people did not have watches. This clock, manufactured by the noted UK Company, JB Joyce & Co, was therefore placed in the main building by the renowned architect Purdon and engineer Roy Bahadur Kanahya Lal Kapoor.

Insiders alleged that the administration, which had already illegally exported to some private party of UK, or scraped the precious statue of Earl of Mayo, the then Viceroy and the Governor General of India, is also going after the clock, which ought to be repaired at any cost as it is rare relic of its kind.

Ironically, neither archeology department of the Punjab nor the city district government is in a position to stop the Mayo hospital from doing so. Talking to The Post Medical Superintendent Dr Fayyaz Ranjha said that the clock had gone out of order for the last several months while it was not possible to repair it. Another clock with donation of Rs 0.8 million, has been fixed in order to maintain the grandeur of the building, he added.
