SGPC to turn keeper of history

makkarWorried over the steady deterioration of Sikh historical monuments, the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) has decided to preserve these.

Talking to TOI on Thursday, SGPC president Avtar Singh Makkar said the committee was chalking out a programme to preserve all buildings related to Sikh history in their original shape.

Henceforth, he added, efforts would be made to protect the shrines even as more structures are raised at the site.

In the past, many historical monuments have been replaced by opulent marble gurdwaras, which add to the beauty of the place, but do nothing to preserve history.

In this endeavour, said Makkar, ‘kar sewa wale’ saints will be requested to maintain the original structures without making any additions or alterations.

Stressing on the need to preserve history, Makkar claimed that SGPC is contemplating setting up a museum at Fatehgarh Sahib. Besides, a memorial will also be built at Fatehgarh Sahib to mark the victory of Baba Banda Singh Bahadur over Sirhind.
